If it's really needed, it's likely the recipient would eventually get it for him/herself anyway. Why waste the opportunity to get something special?

I always prefer getting something I need, over something I want.

This is one of those one-or-the-other kind of questions. No blurring the lines here.

But I like blurring the line. It makes it so warm and fuzzy and inviting... LOL. :)

But, okay, if you're going to MAKE me pick one... it'd have to be what I selected- something I want.

Just because I want something I need, it doesn't always mean I'd like to get it as a gift. Like our dishwasher. I needed a new one, and really wanted a new one.. but I guess it's not something I'd like to get for Christmas or my birthday.
